“Today’s Webtoon” will tell the story of a former Judo athlete On MaEum (to be played by Kim SeJeong) who has to give up her dream because of an injury during a match. She gets a job in the editorial department of a webtoon publishing company and, through ups and downs, learns how to become a true webtoon editor. On the other hand, the slice of life drama “Sleepeeer Hit!” also revolves around an aspiring Olympian who has to quit her sport, Judo, and work for a weekly manga magazine during a time of crisis when e-books are replacing physical books. Despite having to quit Judo, On MaEum retains all the qualities of a national Judo athlete. From a massive appetite to commendable strength, endurance, stamina, and most importantly, unshakeable resolve, MaEum pours her heart and soul into her work, determined to succeed. The character in the J-Drama “Sleepeeer Hit!” corresponding to On MaEum is Kurosawa Kokoro. Both Kokoro and MaEum mean “heart”, making for a clever connection between the original and the adaptation. With Kim SeJeong’s experience in both action dramas as well as romantic comedies, she is perfectly suited to play On MaEum. Actress Kuroki Haru played the role of Kokoro in the original.
Our male lead in the Korean adaptation is Goo JunYoung, to be played by Nam YoonSu. As he works alongside On MaEum, he is inspired by her optimism and diligence, which leads him to grow both as a professional and an individual through self-reflection and sincerity. Goo JunYoung’s character corresponds to Koizumi Jun in “Sleepeeer Hit!”, played by Sakaguchi Kentaro. Nam YoonSu’s versatile range and unbelievable charm will shine brighter than ever in the role of Goo JunYoung. Kurosawa Kokoro and Koizumi Jun share a fond healing relationship where both characters thrive in each other’s presence. Their synergy is off the charts and so is their comedic timing. However, it is important to note that “Sleepeeer Hit!” does not place a strong emphasis on romance, so it will be interesting to see if “Today’s Webtoon” takes a different approach.
At the end of the day, “Today’s Webtoon” is about the inner workings of the publishing industry and how it is kept alive by people who have passion and love for what they do. Both “Juhan Shuttai!”, the manga, and “Sleepeeer Hit!”, the J-Drama adapted from the same are cult classics in the entertainment world.
